Amavasya Mahayajna — For Our Ancestors
Shree Geeta Ashram Seva Cell
Shree Geeta Gaushala Paramarth Sansthan
At Shree Geeta Gaushala, we perform a sacred Amavasya Mahayajna on every Amavasya throughout the year, dedicated to the remembrance and honour of our Pitru (ancestors).
In Sanatan tradition, offering Havan-Yagya, prayers and श्रद्धा to our ancestors is a way of expressing gratitude for the generations who came before us. It reminds us of our roots and gives us an opportunity to pray for the peace of our departed loved ones.
Through the sacred fire and Vedic offerings, devotees come together in prayer and remembrance, seeking Pitru blessings, family well-being and spiritual peace.

Importance of Amavasya Mahayajna for Pitru
In Sanatan tradition, Amavasya is considered an appropriate time for remembering and offering prayers to our ancestors. The Amavasya Havan-Yajna provides a sacred opportunity to express gratitude and श्रद्धा towards our Pitru.
Why is this Yajna significant?
- Honouring our ancestors: Remembering those who came before us and acknowledging their contribution to our family and lineage.
- Pitru Tarpan & remembrance: Traditional offerings and prayers performed with devotion for departed ancestors.
- Purification through Yajna: Havan with sacred offerings into Agni, accompanied by Vedic mantras — symbolising purification and spiritual discipline.
- Prayers for peace: Families pray for the peace of departed loved ones and for the well-being and harmony of the family.
- Gratitude and संस्कार: Teaching the younger generation to remember their roots and maintain gratitude towards previous generations.
- Seva with devotion: At Shree Geeta Gaushala, remembrance of Pitru can be combined with Gau Seva.
The essence of Amavasya Mahayajna is not merely a ritual — it is an expression of श्रद्धा, स्मृति, कृतज्ञता and prayer for our ancestors.
